What is learning innovation?

Talking about learning innovation means referring to a specific didactic context in continuous evolution. The goal is not only to improve learning outcomes, but also to improve the teaching experience as an opportunity of the development of transversal skills evolving process of a specific teaching context. The objective is not only the improvement of learning outcomes, but also the improvement of the learning experience and its enrichment as an opportunity for development in terms of transversal competences.

The Framework “Pedagogy-Space-Technology” (Radcliffe, 2009) is the tool used as a starting point for the design of innovative teaching-learning experiences.

In this context, in order to make teaching innovation processes effective, it is necessary that three pillars intersect with one another:

  • new pedagogical approaches reinforce technologies;
  • technologies support pedagogical approaches and extend spaces;
  • space integrates technologies, making possible and supporting new pedagogical approaches.

Teacher experience designer

Pedagogical approaches

The teacher-designer is responsible for the designing and managing a learning experience that supports the achievement of the Intended Learning Outcomes. The teacher-designer has at his disposal conceptual and practical tools that can support it in consciously observing its own teaching and designing it in new evolutionary directions.

New learning strategies

New spaces

The development of effective innovative teaching and learning strategies requires digital infrastructure and learning spaces that support the development of student activation dynamics with both small and large class sizes.

Catalysts of innovation

Digital technologies

Le digital technologies enable a new relationship to be created with the very concept of teaching content and change their role in the learning experience by becoming drivers of new approaches to classroom teaching.

Book

Designing learning innovation

Where to begin to innovate your teaching? But, first of all, what does it mean to do innovation in the classroom?

Designing learning innovation is intended to support those who do not have a specific pedagogical background and wish to acquire the basic tools of good learning design and then go on to explore the frontiers of innovation.

A set of logical and methodological tools to innovate teaching, finding approaches more in harmony with one’s vision of the teaching-learning experience.

MOOC

Designing learning innovation

Where to begin to innovate your teaching? But, first of all, what does it mean to do innovation in the classroom?

The MOOC “Designing Learning Innovation” aims to complement the tool of the paper book with an online learning environment. In the MOOC, you can find videos summarising the essential contents of the book, infographics and downloadable worksheets, as well as activities, discussions and synchronous and asynchronous exchanges with other participants.

If you actively participate in this course, you will be able to:

  • use basic theoretical-methodological tools (such as Constructive Alignment and the Learning Network) to enhance the didactic coherence between learning objectives, assessment methods and the learning experience in their teaching;
  • apply some pedagogical models of the “active learning” strand to the design of individual teaching modules or to an entire course;
  • assessing advantages and disadvantages, in their teaching, traditional evaluation approaches to new evaluation strategies, particularly those oriented towards formative evaluation;
  • apply simple strategies for active classroom management in small, medium and large classrooms;
  • designing and producing teaching materials quality also by enhancing the availability of “Open Educational Resources”.
